Potential and Fairness

To release "potential" and "give everyone chance to live the life they want" ... we need to "take power away from those who hoard it, to challenge vested interests, to break down privilege, to clear out the bottlenecks that block opportunity and block progress" ... and the simple word behind all these ... "fairness", a message Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader made clear today as he launched his parties' manifesto (a plan to "hard-wire" fairness into British society) ... which includes 4 steps to a fairer Britain, including

i) fair taxes (e.g. by introducing a £10,000 tax-free allowance)
ii) a fair future (e.g. creating jobs by making Britain greener)
iii) a fair chance for every child (e.g. by reduced class sizes)
iv) a fair deal (e.g. by cleaning up politics & introducing a fairer voting system).

He also highlighted the need for trust, stating in detail where taxes will have to rise to pay for tax cuts (as well as to cut the deficit).   With the "Seven Principles of Public Life" in mind (which all UK Politicians are meant to sign up to  - see above picture) straight forward honesty is key. Speaking at the same event, Lib Dem Treasury spokesman Vince Cable said the issue of the deficit had to be "confronted" ... but said Labour and the Conservatives had "banished" the subject from their manifestos.

With trust in politicians at an all time low the Liberal Democrats were one of the few parties wanting to tackle this head on (nb they do not have disgraced MP's currently heading to Court and trying to use 'parliamentary privilege', as well as taxpayer's money to pay for their defence), with the Liberal Democrats leading the way during the expenses scandals but getting little support from the other parties (they all wanted to go off on their long summer break and/or stop it by changing the Freedom of Information Act).

21st century leadership and management will fundamentally change how enterprises operate, how economies will prosper, and how successful democracies will work in the future ... it will also change people's lives for the better ... by challenging the misuse of Power*, releasing  'potential' and creating a "fairer" society ... are we about to see this occur at little faster in the UK ...?

We shall see in the next few weeks ...

Sacked due to the 'expenses row' - but not the MP's !

Poweromics Lite - A civil servant is sacked for criticizing an MP for switching their home (to avoid capital gains tax) ... whilst the MP concerned, along with all the other MP's doing this, have kept their jobs ... ! What does this tell us about the MP's we have and the 'state' we live in ?

With mutiny abound, are we bound to get Democracy?

Minister resignations are abound ... but 21st century leadership and management is really what we need ... changing the 'captain', the 'song', or the 'band' will not stop this ship from sinking ... it'll just change who's first to the life-rafts ...

... and the time for more fundamental change is now ... but we want a 21st century democracy and a proper say ...

"Democracy should happen every day, not just on election day"

Post 162 (leanomist)

A re-shuffle just after an election is a well known political move by the 'leader' to say - "you were not happy ... but we've changed things ..."

What rubbish ... the only thing that's not changing is the one person in the country who believes he's the only man for the job - ie. Gordon Brown himself!

He can no longer hide behind a moral facade ... it's not what you say, it's what you do (and don't do) that counts ... that's what we're bothered about and that's what all politicians should be judged on ... the age of 'spin' has gone ... and attempting 'moral' spin (referring to their upbringing rather than what they're doing now*) is arguably the most disgraceful form of all ...

However, there are probably few people in his party now that people will believe, or trust (except Frank Field perhaps?) ... do people really trust Hazel Blears as a Minister, or Ed Balls as Chancellor of the Exchequer? If they did, there wouldn't be so much talk of Gordon Brown asking Vince Cable to do it ... !

Ed has built a reputation - but for 'Spin' ... and 'Spin' has had it's day!

We need real 'leaders' who can actually 'lead' ... eg listen, learn, care & support, and show respect, sound knowledge, good judgement, responsibility & an ability to take effective action ... rather than focusing on 'celebrity', 'rewarding failure' and 'making sure they'll be ok'. The Government have wrongly got wrapped up in 'celebrity' ... people do like celebrities, but politicians want a bit of it to rub off on them ... and they also love the fact that it diverts people's attention away from what they are/aren't up to too ... at least most of the time (eg. when Joanna Lumley etc get involved with the Gurkas)!

We need 21st century leaders and 21st century management (not 'spin-doctors' or 'celebrities') and at the moment we have neither ... and the scary thing is they do not seem to be visible in whatever 'color of party' you look towards ... which is probably why so many people are currently so disaffected/frustrated ... and perhaps considering voting for 'more extreme' parties to make a point !

... Given this perhaps we need an intermediate stage, where we vote for those who will truly (and rapidly!) give us a 21st century democracy, which may then start to attract more honorable, respectable and capable people into these roles ... but who can we trust ?!?

Whatever happens, if we don't change radically soon, moral & financial bankruptcy will continue to accelerate (and feed off one another) ... and bring the UK to it's knees...

We need to make sure we stop the 'rot', ensure everyone can have proper say and are effectively represented (every day, not just on election day).

* Why did Gordon Brown allow himself to represent us at the D-Day remembrance (instead of the Queen - our Head of State) as soon as he found Barack Obama was attending? Rubbing next to 'celebrity' again perhaps? Why has he been trying to ring Susan Boyle (from Britain's got talent) too? Care, respect or more 'celebrity chasing' ?

Leanomics v Poweromics & Ignoromics

The "Battle" of the "Future"  ...  is a "Battle" of "Values"

Traditional 'economics' is 'too narrow' in scope and also 'out-of-date'. It has also 'failed' hard-working people and is now effectively 'dead'.

But attempts to improve it, change it or widen it, will always be resisted. Dr W Edwards Deming, a creative outsider and a real 'leader', uncovered the "System of Profound Knowledge" and referred to the need for a "New Economics" (nearly 20 years ago) ... but, when terms are so out of date new words/definitions are needed, and for that reason, and for those interested, I am continuing his work ... using the definitions below:

* Leanomics = People taking responsibility for adding value and continuously improving the situation for others (e.g. customers, communities, overall environment), based upon fundamental values such as trust, honor, responsibility and respect.

* Ignoromics = People are either effectively ignorant of the situation (e.g. the overall environment) or not prepared to take responsibility to make sure it changes for the better.

* Poweromics = People using position and power for their own personal gain, based on poor moral values, self interest and greed.

It is worth noting virtually everything fundamentally centres around 'people' and the 'values' they uphold. It is also worth noting that Ignoromics is what allows Poweromics to flourish, and in my view this summarises the current (and widened) definition of 'economics' that prevails today.

Why not take a look at what 'leaders' everywhere are doing (e.g. your boss, company, service provider, government, politicians, media ...) and look at how many people understand this and/or prepared to do something about it ... I think you'll find its small ... albeit steadily growing (helped by the internet, and recent activities of banks/MP's etc).

IMHO the battle of the future is really one of values, and given the above definitions, can be simply summarised as ...

Leanomics v Poweromics & Ignoromics

For those interested I hope this is helpful ... and I would certainly recommend the work of Dr. W. Edwards Deming as a good starting point for looking into this further ... people are still amazed (and learning) how profound his insight actually was ... my book expands on his work too (you can click on here if want to take a look at it too ...)

Comment 53 (leanomist)

In a global economy only those capable of offering (and exporting) things other nations want will survive in the long run. This country lost this concept some years ago and/or wrongly believed financial services were the answer!

'Leanomics', a much wider and far more holistic form of 'economics', looks at community factors too ... such as individual well-being and community contentment, as well as the sustainability of enterprise and the environment. For example, one simple Leanomics test, called the "BUTS" test, can create a great deal of insight by looking at debt alongside the capability of the community to pay it back.

B=Borrowing
U=Untapped talent
T=Trade deficit
S=Stress

Trade deficits, untapped talent and stress all negatively impact on a nations ability/capability to pay back debt, and what do these look like at the moment ? I'll give you a clue - terrible!

We have got into huge debt, sold the family silver, demoralised people, stressed people out, created a broken society, overburdened our children (and our children's children), and still have the 1940's baby-boom to come (with a poorly funded pension system).

Nothing has changed, it's just becoming increasingly clearer (and/or harder to hide!) ... I think Mr Tweedy (comment 1) has summed up the situation very well ... just to re-iterate ...

" ... If Germany, China and Japan invested their surpluses in their own economies, and they successfully uncoupled from the US and the UK, it would leave the US and the UK high and dry.

Without foreign investors to buy gilts and treasuries, our governments would struggle to afford their spending plans, and we would struggle to afford our imports.

Britain and the USA would need to find exports to sell to China, Germany and Japan. But just what would Britain sell? I can't think of anything, seeing as exports of bank loans, insurance and defence manufactures were Britain's only trade surplus during the years preceding the economic crisis. North Sea oil is not what it once was.

The search continues for Britain's magic exports" ...

... and as I also raised in one of Robert Peston' previous blogs ...

" ... so tell us the robust plan to pay back all the extra debt we're taking on and at the same time create 21st century products and services that ...

1. People around the world want and are willing to pay for
2. Will create millions of jobs in the UK, and
3. Will systematically reduce our trade deficits and national borrowing ... *

Next question ... how are we nurturing and accelerating creativity/innovation to develop these new products and services?

Next question ... how are we adopting 21st Century leadership and management to enable both the above?

I've been in meetings with Ministers and the CBI - and guess what ... when difficult questions like these are asked they are all 'weighed, measured and found wanting' ..."

But are you really surprised ? ... We can't trust them with their 'expenses' ... never mind the 'economy' !

Moral bankruptcy has led to ... financial bankruptcy ... which will lead to more moral bankruptcy etc etc ... unless/until something significantly different happens to change it ...

It's not hard to the see this cycle at work, and how it will continue to work ... until hard-working people say enough is enough ... which IMHO they eventually will ...

And questions that then arise include ... how long before they do? ... what will they do? ... and will they be able to sufficiently reverse things once they do?

... IMHO we are in uncharted waters, as history provides some clues but we have not seen how a 'revolution' truly takes place in the 'information age' (powered by the internet) in which we now live ...

There is no doubt that the internet will eventually transform everything ... whether those in positions of 'power' like it or not ... the blog http://poweromics.blogspot.com is just one of many blogs helping to turn information into knowledge, and sharing it with others ... and there are many more besides ...

The time for change is coming ... and I believe it's not very far away ...

"Heads" they "Win" ... "Tails" you "Lose"

Rewarding Failure - Saying 'Hello' to the "Golden Goodbye" ... not long ago, following the banking crisis, the UK Government spoke of the imperative to stop rewarding failure ...

... industry 'leaders' have profited greatly from 'golden goodbyes' for many years, and still do ... despite the clear 'anger' and a great deal of 'government spin' ...

But they are not the only ones profiting from such deals ... MP's are too ... and not surprisingly most are very quiet about it ... it's yet another example of the "do as I say, not as I do" culture we see from those we are supposed to trust ... a key feature of Poweromics* at work.

Many of those MP's who have been found wanting are clearly hanging on to their positions until the next general election to make sure they pocket the most from it ... and they'll probably continue to do so even if they're investigated by the Police and sent to jail ... !

One leader has just spoken out against this, but everyone else seems to be extremely quiet ... are MP's really committed to stopping the MP gravy train, and making the job a Civic responsibility rather than a lucrative and highly profitable 'members club' ... (nb and not a 'club' of 'honorable members')

Let's see ... but their actions to date says they won't, not without a 'fight' ... and as we all know ... "Turkey's don't vote for Christmas ..."

Honesty - Honestly

With all the scandals, and lack of trust in Government, what about the following ...

1. Honesty
2. Integrity
3. Openness
4. Selflessness
5. Leadership
6. Objectivity
7. Accountability ...

Sound good values to uphold? Should they apply in Politics?  ... I think most people would say they not only should, but must !

In fact they are the "Seven Principles of Public Life" that UK Politicians are meant to sign up to, but it appears they espouse them but don't necessarily follow them.  Sound familiar ?  This is very common when Poweromics* is applied ...

... the phrase do as I say, not as I do, come to mind ... and they should not be 'principles' but the 'fundamental values' that must be followed and policies must also support.

When looking at these values, it's hard to see how politicians have applied any of them ... e.g. selflessness, integrity, openness, accountability ... they tried to stop the Freedom of Information Act uncovering all their underhanded activities ... and are still doing so ... why don't we go on to see how their 'offices' are run ... and all the perks & second jobs etc they have too ...

In the name of honesty, openness, integrity and accountability ... who will be the first 'leader' to 'lead' on this ...? let's see ...

We should remember Poweromics is not just occurring in Politics, it's happening in most business/enterprises as well ... and what are these 'leaders' doing about it too ... ?

Leaders are starting to realise the internet is changing the way economies work, it is also changing how businesses work and how democracy will work in the future too ...

Poweromics - Hiding problems and deflecting blame

Their is a great deal of anger being directed by MP's towards the UK House of Commons speaker at the moment ...

Whilst it's probably true he's not got the moral standing to lead the reform of MP's expenses (as he was one of the MP's feeding from the 'trough' ... and tried all he could to stop the information being made available to public) ... he should not become a 'scape goat' - MP's are still individually accountable for their actions, and the moral values, or the lack of moral values, they have demonstrated ...

Those who apply Poweromics* like to 'hide problems' but to also 'blame others' ... they've not managed to do the first ... and they cannot be allowed to do the latter ...

More people are saying they want to stand as independents now ... but can UK people actually have proper democracy** now (i.e. fit for the 21st Century) ... so we can really have our say !

* Poweromics = People using position and power for their own personal gain, based on poor moral values, self interest and greed.

** We only get a say/vote once every five years in a general election, and even then only a small minority of votes actually make a difference as to which of the two main parties gets in Government ... the only votes that effectively 'count' are fringe votes in marginal constituencies (2-3% of the total).

Comment added to Nick Robinson's blog - 192 (Will he stay or will he go?) and 172 (A question of when, not if?)

PS Is David Cameron wanting us to have more of a say too? ... or justing wanting to bring his own form of Poweromics to bear ... ?

–––––––––––––––––––

Comment 171 (LippyLippo)

MPs are acting like the losing team on the 'Apprentice'! They all participated in the expenses sham that lost them the confidence of the public, but in their desperation to save their own skins, they all turn on the guy who gets flustered when questioned by Sir Alan, hoping he'll be the one to get fired, leaving them to go back to their (second) houses!!

Their hypocrisy is astounding. They stood up, one after the other, to demand the resignation of the Speaker, hoping that they could pin the blame squarely on one scape goat before sticking their heads back in the trough. Do they think we're stupid? Do they think that this crisis will simply go away if they manage to pin the blame on the Speaker? That his sacking or resignation will somehow atone for the false claims, the dishonesty, the misuse of tax payers' money? It will not. It must not. This demands a root-and-branch review and the deselection of guilty members. Maybe the Speaker does deserve the boot, but he is not alone by any means. We must not let MPs off the hook over this, wiggle as they might.

Eliminating Crime or Profiting from Crime?

The bbc today report today - UK 'failing' on causes of crime (we have twice the average crime of other European nations)

This is no surprise to those familiar with Poweromics.  As referred to in my book, the Criminal Justice system (which includes the police), needs to focus on 'tackling the causes of crime', and not just profiting from the 'processing of crime'. This is what most police officers go into the force for, until they become institutionalized into the 'system' and give up (eg PC David Copperfield).

The West Midlands Police (mentioned in Chapter 6 of my book - P189-198) have taken a far more proactive approach to policing, by focusing on tackling the causes of crime and developing much better relationships with the communities they serve.  The rest of the criminal justice system has not followed suit however (nor have all the other police forces).

Those involved in rest of the Judiciary System effectively 'profit' from 'processing crime', rather than tackling the 'causes of crime', including lawyers etc, and all at tax payers expense ... and who makes the laws ... the Government ... and who's in Government ... mostly Lawyers/QC's!

This cosy relationship also highlights another area where Poweromics exists ... and one where police who care about our communities are as frustrated by this as we are ... but do Turkey's vote for Christmas? ... not whilst they have a choice ... nor whilst we let them get away with 'murder' ... !
