Police now saying ... 'We need to prepare for Riots'

Every police force could have access to a water cannon within months as police chiefs vow to prevent a repeat of last summer's riots.

Following on from Lord Stevens comments, Senior officers are demanding the 'valuable' crowd control weapons, previously deployed by UK police only in Northern Ireland, and the Government has signalled that it will foot the bill.

Three of the fearsome £1.3million machines could be held at strategic locations to provide fast response to any outbreaks of violence. Chief constables are also considering whether CS gas and Taser stun guns could also be used too.

 

It would be the first time that any of the three weapons have been used for crowd control on the British mainland, and would represent a dramatic escalation in the armoury available for tackling mass disorder.

But critics said the move risks further transforming the police into a 'paramilitary force'. They also point out that the water cannons are too slow-moving to have been deployed effectively during last year's fast-moving riots, and need to be refilled frequently, but supporters say they could be used in static or slow-moving clashes, for example to protect high-profile locations (e.g. stopping people marching to Parliament in order to protest - democracy eh)!

And the reason ... Police chiefs and Politicians are grappling with widespread fears that fresh rioting could break out ... fuelled by unemployment, political discontent and the struggling economy ... and the Government are keen to arm the Police to protect themselves (and the unelected elite, who quietly wield power and who drive increasing levels of inequality).

However Jenny Jones, who sits on London's police and crime committee, said: 'The use of Tasers, CS gas and water cannon signals a dangerous escalation of police tactics. 'It risks turning the police into a paramilitary force'.

Double dip ... here we come!

Further evidence today that we are heading for a double-dip recession ... 

1. Two of the nine Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) members have effectively now admitted it ... with one now saying there is a 50-50 chance the economy will contract in the final three months of the year. They are trying to 'rescue us', or should I say 'cover the recession up', with a further £75bn of quantitative easing (printing money) ... and they hinted a further extension of this is likely in the coming months. The problem with this approach is that the money simply ends up in banks (who caused the problem in the first place) for them to speculate with (rather than lend out to businesses) and it also pushes up prices/inflation (nb the idea that the stock market is 'rallying' is a big con ... it simply follows the effective devaluation of the pound).

2. Sentiment among the British public has dwindled to recession levels as fears mount over the outlook for the economy and household finances. GfK NOP's consumer confidence index fell to -32 in October from -30 in September. It has only breached that level on two occasions since the survey began in 1974 - March 1990, and June 2008. At both points the UK was heading into recession.

But don't worry ... the Chancellor and the Government now have something else to 'pin the blame on' ...  not themselves ... or any of their policies/inaction ... but the crisis in Europe* ... how convenient ... and timely!

* After all the rhetoric from Cameron and the Government about listening to the voice of the people (and giving them a referendum on Europe), it's interesting that they imposed a 'three line whip' to force MP's to vote against a proposal aimed at giving ordinary people an opportunity to have their say over Europe ... whilst they continue to use taxpayers money to prop Europe up! Hypocrisy indeed.

Lack of Opportunity and Lack of Responsibility

Riots flared up last week as thousands of people (mostly young people) took to the streets and looted shops. 

Young people currently face a plethora of challenges, e.g. double the rate of unemployment, the stopping of Education Maintenance Allowances (EMA) and the tripling of tuition fees ... and on getting older they face a lifetime of debt slavery and paying of their mountain of debt (now estimated to be around £60k due to the tripling of tuition fees) and crippling house prices too (due to Government policy and corrupt bankers). The truth is they have been completely let down by Government and given little opportunity or hope ... partly because they were seen as an 'easy target' in the cuts (as most of them do not have a vote and those that do rarely vote anyway)!

Yet there is no excuse for young people doing this. Rather than protesting directly to those responsible for creating this mess (i.e. the self interest and greed of the politicians/bankers), they have also shown their own ignorance and greed ... by destroying their own communities and looting shops instead! This inexcusable ignorance, shown by a small minority, in effect condones the self interest and greed of those who actually created this mess (i.e. the politicians and bankers).

They did not loot Libraries/Waterstones for knowledge ... and they did not loot farmers fields because they could not afford to eat either ... instead they looted JJB, Carphone Warehouse and Dixons for trainers, blackberry's and flat screen TV's! ... All organised using social media ... and their expensive Blackberry's and iPhones! Greed and self interest has in effect bred yet more greed and self interest, destroying communities in the process.

A lack of responsibility, by Government, parents and the 'politically correct', has in effect led to a lack of accountability and responsibility in a growing number of young children, who uncorrected by their parents and the system, want to do nothing ... but expect everything (nb playing computer games doesn't count*)! Rather than an outward looking, helpful and hardworking society, Government over the last 20-30 years has overseen the creation of an inward looking, selfish and lazy society ... where 'value' is determined by "what you have", not "who you are" or "what you do" ... 

"Greed is Good" and "Money for Nothing" have become mantras for many ... which is why rising house prices has become a national obsession (e.g. look at the number of house programmes on TV) ... and is why financial services, such as banking and insurance (who create money from nothing - they counterfeit it, charge interest on it, and gamble it) was seen as the future for Britain ... whilst manufacturing (i.e. people actually adding value and making things) was classed as too 'hard work', boring and irrelevant (nb look where Germany is now, having taken the opposite view ... despite having to prop up the Eurozone, and having already had to absorb the problems of East Germany and the collapse of the Berlin Wall too).

We need to heavily tax the creation of money from nothing (including gambling and counterfeiting by bankers) ... and provide tax incentives for creating jobs. We need an economics where "People taking responsibility for adding value and continuously improving the situation for others (e.g. customers, communities, overall environment), based upon fundamental values such as trust, honor, responsibility and respect".

And we need to turn around the accountability and responsibility of young people, parents and 'leaders' (including politicians). Young people should be held accountable for their actions, and parents for their children. Politicians need to also be held accountable for their failure to reward the values any civilized society needs to be founded upon ... namely Trust, Honor, Responsibility and Respect. They should also reward 'People taking responsibility for adding value and continuously improving the situation for others', and heavily tax/outlaw those things that do not or do the opposite (which includes most of the practices of banks, insurers and parasitic no-win-no fee lawyers).

The Government are desperately trying to deflect blame onto Gangs and are calling in an ex-New York Police Chief to sort it out ... but the failure is a mixture of ignorance, a lack of morality, responsibility and social justice (nb the gap between the rich and poor has spiraled in the last 20-30 years). 

The current Government is deliberately dividing society, rather than bring it together, and trying to stop society turning its gaze on their immoral actions ... e.g. whilst all this is going on, George Osborne is looking to follow Boris Johnson and his call to cut the top rate of tax for the rich (which will make the gap between rich and poor even greater), whilst increasing taxes and cutting services for the young and poor! 

They both claim this is needed to 'boost' the economy - what a joke! ... the rich simply use their money to accumulate more money (e.g. by buying up and then renting houses, excluding young people from home ownership)! If they really wanted to boost the economy they would invest in young people and the future and providing tax incentives for job creation, not tax cuts for the rich! He would also boost tax revenues by taxing areas that generate 'money for nothing' too (e.g. land values, housing speculation, investment banking and insurance). 

Unfortunately ignorance is not bliss, and as seen last week, ignorance can result in actions that are totally misguided and counterproductive! Unrest will unfortunately continue to grow whilst power is unbalanced and self-interest and greed remain acceptable mantras in society** ... and for things to change for the better, looters need to be replaced by serious, responsible, and organized protesters, who are keen to see justice, trust, honor, responsibility and respect ... not just in society ... but from their 'leaders'.

* Many young people are today immersed in computer games, including 18 rated ones such as Grand Theft Auto, which involves them stealing, killing,  rioting and looting! Such games must make it harder for them to distinguish between good and bad, right and wrong, fiction and reality ... when doing all the wrong things is 'rewarded'!

** Cameron's comments about holding people to account, and fixing the morality in society, are I'm afraid mostly smoke and mirrors and spin (from an ex PR spin doctor) ... because the courts are doing very little in terms of sentencing, and his chancellor has yet again shown they are continuing with their plans to raid the poor for the benefit of the rich. Just like the NHS, Cameron/Osborne will try to push ahead quickly ... before any subsequent review is completed (just like he did with GP commissioning)!

Collusion and corruption - between the Media, Police and Government ...

If anyone's in any doubt about the level of 'corruption', 'collusion' and 'misuse of power' in this country (e.g. bankers, politicians, media etc) ... then they need look no further than the 'circus' currently engulfing the media right now ...

Information, known by the Police for years, but 'quietly'/'corruptly' ignored, has now been raised that the 'News of World' has not only been illegally hacking phones of celebrities/politicians, but it has been paying corrupt Police Officers £10,000's for telephone numbers of crime victims (e.g. Milly Dowler), terrorist victims/survivors (e.g. 7/7) and war victims/relatives (e.g. Afghanistan, Iraq) too ... and then, just as shockingly, deleting messages/evidence so more messages could be left (so they could also hack new messages too).

Once the scandal broke there's been uproar ... and the media (News of the World and the rest of Rupert Murdoch's Empire), Police and Government are reeling trying to work out what to do ... and, unusually, they currently do not appear to have an answer! 

David Cameron, the Prime Minister, has himself close links with current events, given his previous appointment of ex 'News of the World' editor Andy Coulson as his Director of Communications (who now appears to have been complicit in such activities) and also given his close personal friendship with Rebekah Brooks (currently News International CEO and former editor of the News of the World) too.

Mr Cameron has been predictably careful with his words ... confirming only that there will be an inquiry once the police 'inquiries' have concluded. But others are pressing the Government further over this whole murky affair, urging for both a public and judicial review into the handling off this affair, to avoid any risk of the police 'investigating themselves', and to avoid any risk of any 'cover-up'. People, such as Chris Bryant MP, are also demanding a very careful selection of who leads any such review, given the vast number of police and judiciary involved in secretive groups (e.g. the masons) ... [which in itself uncovers yet more about the corrupt world we live in!] 

Given the illegal/unethical practices going on within the News of the World/News International, many (including OfCom) are once again challenging the Government over the proposed takeover of BSkyB by Rupert Murdoch's (owner of News Corporation, News International and News of the World). 

Rupert Murdoch controls a great deal of the media already, yet Jeremy Hunt, despite strong representations (over 100,000), still appears to be resisting referring the takeover to the Competition Commission. However OfCom are themselves could consider, particularly given recent events, blocking the takeover on grounds that News Corporation does not appear to be a "fit and proper" owner of a UK broadcaster.

Ministers are loathed to challenge Murdoch, due to the power he already wields (or more specifically the misuse of power he wields!), but a number of Politicians are now saying enough is enough ... and Politicians must stop colluding with the media and put a stop to this murky/corrupt practice. Chris Bryant told the House of Commons that the 'whole political system has failed'! 

I agree ... but do you think this will happen?  ... IMHO the spin doctors (NB David Cameron was an ex-PR man himself!) will find ways to 'buy time' ... time to see how things develop and time to see how they can 'spin their way out of this' ... in order to clear their name ... and to give their 'friend' Murdoch what wants!

While 'Rome burned' ... Politicians 'plotted' to topple the Prime Minister

In the wake of the 7/7 attacks on London, and as Prime Minister Tony Blair focused on trying to stop further terrorist attacks, Gordon Brown and his top henchmen, instead of helping the Prime Minister, saw it as an opportunity to step up their plan to oust the Prime Minister.

This might be old news, but recently leaked documents now officially show how Gordon Brown's own self-interest, and his relentless pursuit of power, completely overshadowed any interest in helping to protect the British public.

Just as importantly, this was also true for his henchmen, Ed Balls, Ed Miliband and Douglas Alexander too, who were duely 'rewarded' by Gordon Brown once Tony Blair had finally been ousted.

And the big issue now ... Well Ed Miliband is now the leader of the Opposition ... and Ed Balls is his right hand man! 

So we are now in a position where people do not trust the Government ... and they cannot trust the leaders of the Opposition either!


What a mess ... and with the Liberal Democrats having 'sold' their soul in pursuit of power ... and having reneged on all of their promises ... trust in politicians is once again at an all time low ... and the result ... frustration, anger and apathy / action !


Either way, I guess people will get what they deserve!

BBC - Duty of Care ... and a Dereliction of Duty

To date the BBC has singularly (and deliberately) failed to address the fundamental issues raised by current NHS reforms ... e.g. rewarding GP's for rationing healthcare (a clear conflict of interest), as well all the other fundamental issues raised by every medical professional body (e.g. British Medical Association, Royal College of Surgeons, Royal College of Nursing etc etc)

In my humble opinion this is not only a dereliction of duty, but also points towards a deliberate conspiracy between the BBC and the Government, which is allowing the Government to press ahead with controversial and detrimental NHS reforms which affect everyone's health and well-being, and destroy the NHS. For instance, ask yourself why the Government are trying hard to bribe the greedy GP's to take part (with lucrative personal rewards for implementing it) ... and why all the true, honest, trustworthy and honorable GP's are so against it.

Current NHS reform were not asked for, or voted for, by anyone ... yet are being pushed through rapidly by this Government regardless of all the concerns raised by professional bodies and the general public. The introduction of the NHS was a key moment in UK history, and its destruction is equally as dramatic. Yet the BBC are failing to cover this issue in any real way (despite the public repeatedly asking them to). Nick Robinson is conveniently (for the Government) and deliberately not addressing it, preferring to focus all his attention on Libya instead, and the BBC's health correspondent, Fergus Walsh, is not addressing the issue either (despite his stated aim of wanting to look into the future and into the ethical issues associated with healthcare in particular).

Here is what I have posted on his blog when discussing the sharing/adoption of good practice (nb my post, the first post in response to his blog, was referred to their moderators rather than posted, despite the fact it broke no house rules ... and was then left that way!) 

Hospital managers also have a responsibility to adopt world class leadership and management practices ... but unfortunately such practices are almost completely opposite to what most managers currently understand/practice! However in leading hospitals the adoption of 21st century practices is quietly (and successfully) transforming patient outcomes, radically improving patient care and reducing unnecessary stress for both patients and staff. The problem is this type of 'management' is radically different to 'traditional management' ... and needs far less 'management' ... which perhaps goes some way to explaining why some managers are rather slow to spot it and adopt it! (i.e. it's a mixture of ignorance, apathy and self interest on the part of leaders and managers). Why don't you have a look into this area as well?

PS Why are you not also blogging about the ethics of profits v patient care (e.g. rewarding GP's for rationing healthcare)? IMHO if this blog is worth anything at all it should really be tackling this. Or is this an 'agreed no go-area' for the BBC! I note Nick Robinson is also completely avoiding this area and is happy to allow the Government to quietly destroy the NHS too ... through reforms no-one voted for and every professional body is against ... yet no-one is being listened to ... ethics, democracy, an independent BBC? I think not.

Post 1 was referred for no good reason and has still not been reviewed/published! 

IMHO the BBC health blog is failing in its duty of care by not tackling the fundamental (and once in a lifetime) ethical issues/crisis which the NHS is facing at the moment (e.g. allowing GP's to profit from rationing healthcare - i.e. conflicts of interest), and Nick Robinson isn't either (preferring to focus only on Libya), despite the fundamental concerns raised by every professional medical body. Incompetence, dereliction of duty, conspiracy ... could be any or all of them.

The BBC appear not to want to upset their paymasters ... and this is not the licence fee payer - but the Government who decide how much (if anything) the licence fee payer has to pay! Independent ... I think not! They are just as bad as the politicians ... i.e. looking after themselves with no responsibility/duty of care.

I think these posts say it all really ... i.e. don't expect the BBC to feel they have a duty of care to the public (who they are supposed to serve - as we pay their salary), as they know the group who actually decide their fate is the Government  ... who agree the level of BBC licence fee and force people to pay ... but then most learned people in the blogosphere realise this already (nb the ex-director general of the BBC, Greg Dyke, Jeremy Paxman and Peter Sissons etc have all previously voiced their concern about this in the past).

'Patient Care' vs 'GP Greed' - the real battle within the BMA

Doctors have today called upon the government to put a halt to its overhaul of the NHS in England, but stopped short of opposing the plans outright [nb due to GP greed]!

An emergency meeting of the British Medical Association - the first of its kind for nearly 20 years - urged ministers to withdraw the health bill so the plans could be looked at again -  plans the union did describe as "dangerous and risky".

The emergency meeting was called by the BMA leadership after concerns from its grassroots membership about the plans. The motion voted in favour of by delegates says withdrawing the health bill is needed so that the controversial and more radical elements of the legislation can be considered again. But a motion calling for outright opposition of the plans was narrowly rejected [nb a key moment, and again the result of greedy GP's].

This emergency meeting was called because those members want the BMA to go further and harden its stance following discussions by the leadership on Wednesday. The result could force union's leaders taking a tougher line with government.

However the 'government' - and in particular No. 10 - is 'fully committed' to the plans [even though the Liberal Democrat party - who are part of this coalition government - rejected the plans themselves only two days ago]! The bill is already well on its way through parliament [nb a bill created without a mandate from anyone and which is being forced though by No. 10] and pilots are starting across the country [nb they had no problem bribing a few greedy GP's to try it].

BMA leader Dr Hamish Meldrum said he would rather see the NHS as the preferred provider instead of having a level playing field with the big health companies, and said "We want to put more pressure on the government to change what are flawed and very risky proposals for the NHS" [nb he has deliberately avoided referring to the fundamental conflicts of interests, and GP profiteering, that these current plans create].

More than 300 doctors attended the meeting with many supporting Dr Meldrum's stance. Dr Layla Jader, a public health physician, said: "The NHS needs evolution not revolution - these reforms are very threatening to the future of the NHS. If they go through, our children will look back and say how could you allow this to happen?" [Well said - I couldn't have put in better myself].

Members voted not to support a "damaging and unjustified" shake-up, which will see GPs get control of much of the NHS budget along with the scrapping of primary care trusts and strategic health authorities.

A Department of Health spokesman said: "We are disappointed the BMA has decided to take this step rather than work constructively with us to improve services for patients. The reality is over 5,000 GP practices, covering two-thirds of the country, have already signed up and have started to implement plans to give patients better care" [nb those not voluntarily signing up are being forced to as no alternative is being given].

What they fail to highlight is the moral battle going on in the BMA, where on the one hand there are greedy GP's who see a fantastic opportunity to profiteer  [and who do not want the BMA to intervene] ... and on the other there are all the trustworthy and honorable doctors who are strongly against the plans due to the clear/fundamental conflicts of interest they create [but who have until now had little/no support, as the BMA has till now tried to play a 'passive role' in order to support the greedy GP's).

By 'bribing' greedy GP's, this Government is trying to push through it plans and it has effectively split the BMA [a clear 'divide and conquer' strategy]. But will it work ... IMHO I unfortunately think it will ... though I obviously hope it does not!

This Government is trying every trick in the book and if they do succeed, they will, without any mandate from the people, dismantle the NHS and destroy the trust a patient should have in their GP in the process.

No longer selling the Forests ... was this really due to "People Power" ?

Does the Coalition's decision to withdraw its plan to sell off the nation's forests show this Government is really "listening to it's people" ... 

or is it an easy, visible (and cynical) way for them to 'say they listen' ... as a defence for when they are accused of not listening/consulting about anything else ... (n.b. as such plans are arguably rather trivial when compared to planned NHS reforms for example ... which they have little/no intention of listening to anyone about, despite growing concern) ... 

Most of the blogging community appear to be very clear on this one ... and I'm afraid it's the latter.

"People power" will continue to grow ... but this isn't a great example of it ... for the truth is the Government conceded very little by withdrawing this plan. 

It's interesting to see how far more people are willing to stand up against  forests being sold off ... than to fight for the future of healthcare*. Let's see if this changes in coming weeks ... and if real "People Power" arises as a result. 

* Is this a mixture of ignorance and selfishness perhaps, or is it more akin to the fact that most people care about animals more than they do about people ?

Public confidence collapsing ... a self-feeding downward spiral ?

A ComRes poll for ITV News shows that half the country thinks the Government has lost control of the economy and fear a double dip.

The sixth installment of the Cuts Index, conducted by ComRes, shows that almost half the country (48%) believes that the Government has lost control of the economy. This compares to 29% who believe that the Government is in control of the economy.

Polled after last week's drop in GDP, 52% of the public believe that the UK is on course for another wave of recession, up from 38% when asked the same question in October. In contrast, 17% of country doesn't believe there will be a double dip - compared to 24% in October.

Asked whether they think things are generally heading in the right direction, 48% said no, up from 32% when asked in October. This compares to 28% saying they think things are heading in the right direction, down from 41% in October.

Asked about who they trust to see the UK through the current economic situation, 22% of the public say they trust George Osborne, 33% trust David Cameron and 22% trust Nick Clegg (nb the trust in all three men has fallen by 10-12%).

With so little faith in the Coalition, and even less in the Opposition (they polled only 15%!), it doesn't bode well for the future of Britain ... as a mixture of ignorance and apathy will continue to prevail ... 

for a while longer at least. This won't last forever however ... as a self-feeding negative downward spiral has started, with household incomes dropping (except for the very rich) and unemployment rising (nb we have also learnt this week that a staggering 97% of all new jobs have only been for part-time work) ... and hard-pressed people will start to take more notice, and demand very different things ... 

NB Politicians need to take a look at the recent IMF report, and on the risks of civil war (due to imbalances of Power).

NHS Reforms: Patient Choice or Doctor's Choice?

There is lots of Government spin about current NHS reforms being all about 'Patient Choice' ... but the reality couldn't be further from the truth ... as these reforms are all about 'Doctor's Choice' (or more specifically 'GP choice'), as NHS budgets are handed over to them to manage. 

As my previous blog pointed out, most GP's have already profited very well from previous 'reforms' (e.g. taking massive pay-rises for themselves whilst working far less hours), and have shown themselves to be more than happy to pocket any additional money too (e.g. spending it on building property portfolios).  

So now the plan is give them virtually all the NHS budget (£80bn) to spend ... under a mirage of 'Patient Choice' ... when in reality GP's will be making all the decisions themselves, and ensuring they maximise the amount of money paid to themselves, their consortia and business partners. Deals, bribes, partnerships and back-handers will all undoubtedly be uncovered, in addition to all the additional lucrative Government 'incentives' on offer (for helping the Government to achieve £20bn in 'efficiency savings').  

'GP's Choice' will become increasingly a choice between 'caring for patients' and 'caring for their own bank balance' ... something many honorable and trustworthy GP's have already expressed concern about.

The Coalition have countered this by saying 'Patient Choice' means patients can go to a different GP if they wish, but the reality is likely to be the complete opposite of this, with 'GP Choice' resulting in GP's being more likely not to take on patients with serious conditions, and more likely to restrict the healthcare provided to the most needy/unwell in our society too (e.g. for treatment of expensive chronic conditions).


The reforms being proposed are testing the honor/integrity of our GP's, with many unhappy about how they compromise their unique (and trusted) position ... of being able to provide healthcare in the best interests of their patients. At the same time, others are no doubt quietly look forward to further pay increases and taking advantage of many additional ways to boost their bank balances (e.g. 'buying-in' additional services - provided by themselves!) ... at the expense of patient care.


If "Patient Choice" is really behind this reform, at what point did patients 'Choose it'? ... as it was not part of any of the Coalitions' pre-election prospectuses!  


I'm afraid it's all smoke and mirrors and spin again I'm afraid ...

Update 29/01/2011: More healthcare groups are raising their concerns, including the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Nursing. Many commentators, including the Nuffield Trust research body, are expressing their fear that patients will lose faith in their GPs if they believe they are denying them treatment on the grounds of cost. It also pointed out that the pay doctors receive, likely to include cash bonuses, will be “sensitive”!

A small step in the right direction

Following the General Election, and five days of discussions, the Liberal Democrats have negotiated a referendum on electoral reform, as part of a coalition of the type not seen for over 70 years.   Whilst not a proposal to move to full proportional representation, the alternative vote (AV) is at least one step forward towards 21st century democracy.  

Most countries around the world already have such systems, and their political parties are quite used to working together as part of a coalition.  Parties have to work together and compromise, and make sure key policies are sufficiently scrutinised and prioritised, rather than simply 'nodded through' or 'pushed through' by party whips.  The effect of this is already starting to appear, with compromises already on the make up of Government (e.g. Shared cabinet), electoral reform (e.g. AV referendum) and economic policy (e.g. with lower rate tax thresholds taking priority over providing inheritance tax breaks for the rich) for the greater good. Rather than a 'hung parliament' in my humble opinion a better description is a 'balanced parliament'.

A new system based on fundamental 'values' such as fairness, responsibility and respect is also a good start, but there is a great deal to do and far more will be needed.  The challenge (particularly for the Liberal Democrats) is to now show how effective a UK coalition Government can be, showing how 21st century politics could work for the benefit of the people, as if they do not electoral reform will fall at the first hurdle - i.e. in the referendum itself.  One thing is certain, the Tory dominated press will take any opportunity to attack any change to the voting system. The Conservatives did not want to see a referendum on the voting system (as the 'first passed the post' system serves their party, and the labour party, so well), and will I am sure argue strongly against it when it comes to the referendum.  The press tried hard to push for a majority Conservative Government so they could avoid such concessions, but even with the clear headwind provided by an unfair voting system, they did not succeed.  

The voice of the people was still sufficiently large to demand compromise and coalition - and 21st Century democracy. There's a long long way to go ... and many challenges ahead ... hence we wish our new leaders, and everyone in the UK, every success in bringing this about ... and in successfully turning our economy around.

Masters or Servants?

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat party leader, unveiled five proposals to control "the bonus culture" in the City. Clegg said there should be "no rewards for failure" and called for a "top-to-toe" overhaul of the British banking system (including an end to "morally obscene" salaries and bonuses).

"The problem started with the banks so the solution must start with the banks too," he said at the party's daily news conference yesterday, and he said the public should feel that "never again are your everyday savings held "hostage" by people in the City.

The Liberal Democrats' five-point plan to reform the banking system would:

1. Limit cash bonuses to £2,500 annually, with any bonuses in excess of this figure to be paid in shares which could not be sold for five years
2. Ban board directors from receiving bonus payouts
3. Extend the Financial Services Act so loss-making banks were not allowed to pay bonuses
4. Ensure the names of all banking employees earning more than the prime minister were published
5. Lead to directors of banks being fined if their institution broke the industry's code of practice

These five steps would "transform the culture of greed which continues to disfigure the banking industry in this country" and ensure the banking system became "the servant, not the master", Mr Clegg said.  

The party's Treasury spokesman, Vince Cable, said the UK was "still in a major economic disaster" and that "The country is now poorer than it was before the banking crash and what we need to be focusing on is how we prevent it happening again” (echoing many of the posts on this blog).

Mr Clegg said it would reveal a "new approach" to a financially-stable economy, based on equity not debt, "where we learn as a country to build things again, not just bet on things on computer screens in the City" … from a leader who may well yield significant influence/power in a few weeks time this is good to hear, but he will need to think more carefully about the steps needed to successfully transition from an outdated and flawed economy (Poweromics) to a 21st century value adding economy (Leanomics) … and just like President Obama made clear, we must ensure the banks pay taxpayers every penny back (and make sure investment banks are separated from commercial/high street banking too).

In my humble opinion, Vince Cable appears to be the closest to identifying what a successful 21st century economy needs, having also hosted sessions promoting the introduction of a Land Value Tax (to replace unjust/unfair taxes) for instance. The Liberal Democrats also want to completely overhaul the archaic (19th Century) voting system, so MP’s properly represent (and are held accountable to) the people they are supposed to serve. 

If you’re relying on others to help you – good luck – you’ll need it. Labour are relying on spin and clearly cannot be trusted e.g. this week Brown stood up to tell us there will be no more income tax rises … but he said that last time, and watch out for National Insurance everyone, which is just another name for the same thing (n.b. they’ve given no guarantees on this one and Brown has also raised it before) – why did the press (e.g. the BBC) not ‘press’ him on this…?  As for the Tories, Cameron has said he wants to give people ‘power’ (e.g. by letting parents set up their own schools – more of a gimmick than a practical solution), but at the same time has no desire/interest in changing how MP’s are given power or wield (e.g. profit from) power.  Instead the Tories want to slash public spending, change inheritance tax laws to favour the rich … and would vehemently oppose changing/removing unfair taxes and replacing them with a Land Value Tax (as the Tories represent, and are heavily backed by, all the rich land owners/bankers profiting heavily from land without adding any value at all). 

The election provides an opportunity to allow a little more common sense to filter into our Economic/Political System (e.g. values, fairness, justice) and if this happens our failing economy may actually start to turn around.  If it does not it will simply continue its downward spiral (don’t be fooled by any apparent ‘recovery’ – as the Government simply postponed all the ‘pain’ until after the election) until the situation gets so dire that people finally decide to do something about it – but at this stage it’ll probably be too late to successfully turn things around (NB I do not support any political party and like most people hold the vast majority of MP’s in contempt – however I do care about people’s future, the state of the economy and the level of democracy in the UK).
